The History of White Tea

White tea is one of the oldest and most refined types of tea, with a history that dates back to China’s Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). At that time, the imperial court prized the youngest, most delicate tea buds covered in fine white hairs. These leaves were handpicked, minimally processed, and reserved exclusively for royalty.

During the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD), white tea became even more prominent. Emperor Huizong of China regarded it as the highest form of tea and actively promoted its production. This period also saw the development of powdered tea preparation methods, resembling what we now know as matcha.

The traditional method of white tea production has been preserved to this day. The most renowned varieties—such as Bai Hao Yin Zhen (Silver Needle) and Bai Mudan (White Peony)—are still crafted in China’s Fujian Province. Unlike green or black tea, white tea is not rolled or heavily oxidized, which helps retain its delicate flavor and high antioxidant content.

Today, white tea is cherished around the world for its elegant aroma, health benefits, and natural processing method that has remained unchanged for over a thousand years.
